Our team of experts has worked tirelessly to gather and present the latest research findings, as well as to connect women with MS to resources and support networks. Our website aims to provide you with the most up-to-date, evidence-based information on pregnancy and MS, as well as opportunities to participate in pregnancy-related research studies. We believe every woman with MS deserves access to clear, reliable guidance when planning a family and we are here to aid you with this.

Ruth Dobson

Ruth is a Consultant Neurologist with extensive experience in multiple sclerosis and related disorders. She currently leads a number of research projects including a multi-centre pharmacovigilance study in MS (OPTIMISE:MS), the UK MS Pregnancy Register, and a multi-ethnic genetics study in MS (ADAMS). She is interested in the role of modifiable factors such as Epstein Barr virus and vitamin D in the development of MS and its subsequent complications, and is using routinely acquired healthcare data to better understand this. She has been awarded research grants from MS Society, NMSS, BMA Foundation, MRC and NIHR.

David Rog

David Rog is a Consultant Neurologist with an interest in Multiple Sclerosis, based at Manchester Centre for Clinical Neurosciences, Salford. David trained in Neurology in Liverpool, Manchester and Preston and was appointed as a Consultant in January 2007. His research work using Sativex to treat nerve pain in MS gained him the Consortium of MS Centres’ Whitaker Track young investigator award and the book MS at your fingertips, written by David and his colleagues for people living with MS, was highly commended at the BMJ Book Awards. David’s team won the MS Trust QuDoS award recognising quality in the delivery of MS services. David is a principal investigator on a number of MS clinical trials and the national coordinator for 3 disease modifying treatment pregnancy registries.

Stella Hughes

Dr Stella Hughes obtained her medical degree from Queen’s University Belfast (QUB) and undertook neurology training in Northern Ireland. She completed a research fellowship with the MSBase Registry in Melbourne in 2011. She was awarded an MD from QUB in 2014 for her thesis entitled ‘Epidemiological Perspectives on MS’. She works as a Consultant Neurologist with specialist interest in MS at the Belfast HSC Trust and is an Honorary Lecturer in Queen’s University, Belfast. She is a current member of the ECTRIMS Council and a member of the UK MS Pregnancy Register Steering Group.

Rod Middleton

Rod is the Project Manager and System Architect of the UK MS Register and has been involved with the project since its beginning. In addition to the MS Register he has been involved with working on the ALSPAC project to bring general practice information in from multiple practices across the country for a from birth cohort. He is also involved with teaching in the MSc in Health Informatics, delivered within the Data Science department. Rods background is from the NHS working as both a senior informatics manager in Critical Care and Theatres for several clinical systems, including neonatal prescribing.

Peter Brex

Dr Peter Brex, MB BS, MD, FRCP, is a consultant neurologist who has held Multiple Sclerosis (MS) clinics at a King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in Southeast London since 2005. His MD thesis was conducted at the Institute of Neurology on Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in people presenting with the first symptoms of MS. His neurology training was at King’s College Hospital, Barts & The Royal London Hospitals and The National Hospital for Neurology & Neurosurgery. Since he been a consultant, he has taken an interest in MS and Pregnancy and has lectured widely on this. He co-edited a textbook on Neurology & Pregnancy (Informa Healthcare, published 2012). He was the lead author for the UK consensus on pregnancy in MS: ‘Association of British Neurologists’ guidelines and is on the steering committee for the MS Pregnancy Register.

Owen Pearson

Dr Owen Pearson is a Consultant Neurologist at Morriston Hospital, Swansea, with a special interest in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and related disorders.

He qualified from the University of Wales College of Medicine in 1997, following which he trained in Neurology in Wales, Nottingham and Birmingham. He completed his MD thesis “Measurement of Walking Mobility in Multiple Sclerosis” whilst supervised by Prof. CM Wiles and remains interested in mobility and MS outcome measures.

In 2008, Dr Pearson was appointed Consultant with a specialist interest in MS in Swansea (Abertawe Bro Morgannwg Health Board) and is the Clinical Lead for the MS team covering South West and West Wales.

Helen Ford

Helen Ford is a consultant neurologist with a special interest in multiple sclerosis. Helen trained in neurology in Yorkshire, UK, and was appointed as a consultant neurologist in 1998. Helen works with a multidisciplinary MS team based at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. Helen is Honorary Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Leeds. Helen’s research interests are in employment in MS, social determinants of health, clinical trials, development of patient reported outcome measures and kinematic analysis of upper limb function.

Katy Murray

Dr Katy Murray is a consultant neurologist with a special interest in multiple sclerosis and neuromyelitis optica. She leads the Scottish neuromyelitis optica clinic, in addition to holding weekly MS clinics at the Anne Rowling Clinic and general neurology clinics in Forth Valley. She has a particular interest in managing pregnancy and MS. She recruits to MS and NMO research trials and collaborates with the National NMO team from Liverpool. Katy studied at the University of Edinburgh, followed by neurology training in Edinburgh, Christchurch New Zealand and Melbourne Australia. 

Nicola Bonham

Nichola has been an MS Specialist Nurse since 2002, initially working in Aberdeen and the Grampian region. She started her current post as an MS specialist nurse in 2003. She works in a team of three MS Nurses, providing services for people affected by MS in Edinburgh and the Lothian area. She completed an MSc in Multiple Sclerosis in 2010. Her thesis, titled “Multiple Sclerosis in Pregnancy and Childbirth” was the start of her interest in MS and motherhood, particularly as MS disproportionately affects women in their twenties and thirties. Being involved in the MS pregnancy register, provides a perfectly timed opportunity to build on her MSc, and to link her current clinical practice with the development of research, skills and experience.

Natasha Hoyle

Natasha Hoyle is the Lead Pharmacist for Neurosciences at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. She has a particular interest in autoimmune neurological conditions, such as Multiple Sclerosis, and how they can be managed alongside co-morbidities. She is an active member of the Multidisciplinary Team, in both clinical and research activities.

Natasha has won the MS Trust QuDoS award for Outstanding MS Pharmacist, recognising her contribution to the delivery and improvement of MS services.  She is a Raising the Bar for MS winner and regularly collaborates on service developments, guidelines and research projects.

Denisse Bongol

Denisse Bongol has been a Clinical Nurse Specialist in MS at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN) since 2019. She has a special interest in women’s health in MS and co-leads the bespoke MS Family Planning and Pregnancy clinic at NHNN, supporting women throughout their journey from pre-conception to postpartum. This includes providing up-to-date information, dedicated nurse support, regular reviews, MDT collaboration, and streamlined pathways for DMTs. She is also involved in a breastfeeding study in women with relapsing MS as a study coordinator, and is currently pursuing her MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice.
